St. James Parish, Louisiana

The St. James Parish (French: Paroisse de Saint- Jacques) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 22.102 inhabitants and a population density of 34.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Convent.

Geography

The Parish is located in southeastern Louisiana, is located in the south about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 668 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes:

History

The St. James Parish was formed on March 31, 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes. It was named after James, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.

At the time of formation of St. James was on the west bank of the Mississippi River district capital. 1869 moved to the seat in tonight's Convent.

According to the census in 2000 lived in St. James Parish 21,216 people in 6,992 households and 5,551 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 49.99 percent White, 49.38 percent Black or African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian, and 0.12 percent from other races; 0.37 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.61 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 6,992 households out of which 38.9 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 19.3 percent were single mothers, 20.6 percent were non-families, 18.4 percent of all households and 7.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.43 persons.

In relation to the parish the population was spread out 29.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 35,277, and the median income for a family was $ 41,751. Males have a median income of $ 37,487, women $ 21,712. The per capita income was 14,381. 20.7 percent of the population and 18.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 15.1 percent of those 65 years.
