Washington Parish, Louisiana
The Washington Parish (French: Paroisse de Washington) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 47 168 inhabitants and a population density of 27.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Franklinton.
Geography
The Parish is located in the east of Louisiana, bordering both the North and to the east by Mississippi and has an area of 1751 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following Parishes and Counties:
History
The Washington Parish was formed in 1819 from parts of St. Tammany Parish. It was named after George Washington (1732-1799), the first president of the United States.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Washington Parish 43 926 people in 16,467 households and 11,642 families. The population density was 25 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 67.42 percent White, 31.53 percent Black or African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, and 0.11 percent from other races; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 16,467 households out of which 32.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.3 percent were married couples living together, 17.1 percent were single mothers, 29.3 percent were non-families, 26.6 percent of all households and 12.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 26.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 24,264, and the median income for a family was $ 29,480. Males have a median income of $ 27,964, women $ 17,709. The per capita income was $ 12,915. 19.4 percent of families 24.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 32.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 20.4 percent of those 65 years.
