Saint Helena Parish, Louisiana

The St. Helena Parish (French: Paroisse de Sainte -Hélène ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In 2010, the Parish had 11,203 inhabitants and a population density of 10.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Greensburg.

The St. Helena Parish is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Baton Rouge.

Geography

The Parish is located in east-central Louisiana, bordered to the north Mississippi and has an area of 1060 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered by the following Parishes and Counties:

St. Helena Parish was formed in 1810 from parts of the West Florida territory.

According to the census in 2000 lived in St. Helena Parish 10,525 people in 3,873 households and 2,784 families. The population density was 10/km ². The population consists of 46.53 percent White, 52.42 percent Black or African American, 0.10 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.14 percent from other races; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 3,873 households out of which 34.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.9 percent were married couples living together, 18.4 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 25.4 percent of all households and 10.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.27 persons.

In relation to the parish the population was spread out 29.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 24,970, and the median income for a family was $ 29,950. Males have a median income of $ 30,218, women $ 16,853. The per capita income was $ 12,318. 22.8 percent of families 26.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 35.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 23.2 percent of those 65 years.
