History

Amite County was formed on February 24, 1809 from parts of Wilkinson County. It was named after the running here Amite River.

On October 20, 1977 in Amite County rushed the band Lynyrd Skynyrd along with their crew in a Convair approximately eight miles from the city of McComb away from. Of the 26 occupants, five people were killed and many were seriously injured.
