Wayne County (Mississippi)

Wayne County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Waynesboro. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Mississippi, bordering Alabama and has an area of 2107 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Wayne County was formed on December 21, 1809 from Washington County. It was named, as well as the district capital, according to Anthony Wayne (1745-1796), a brigadier general in the American Revolutionary War.

The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size is 3.15 people.

29.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.7 percent between 18 to 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 11.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.

The average income of a household was $ 25,918, for a family is $ 30,513. Males have a median income of $ 27,139 compared with $ 16,680 for women. The per capita income stood at 12.757 U.S. dollars. Approximately 21.4 percent of families and 25.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
