Holmes County (Mississippi)

The Holmes County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lexington, which was named after a place of slaughter in the American War of Independence.

History

The Holmes County was formed on February 19, 1833 from parts of Yazoo County. It is named after David Holmes (1769-1832), the last Governor (1809-1817) of the Mississippi Territory, the first Governor of the State of Mississippi (1817-1820) and U.S. senator ( 1820-1825 ).
