Stone County (Mississippi)

The Stone County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wiggins.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme south of Mississippi, is about 40 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1160 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Stone County was formed on April 3, 1916 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after John Marshall Stone (1830-1900), a governor of Mississippi (1876-1882, 1890-1896 ).

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Stone County 13,622 people in 4,747 households and 3,626 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.
