Greene County (Mississippi)

The Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Leakesville.

The County is located almost in the extreme south of Mississippi, on the east by Alabama and is in the south about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico. The Greene County has an area of 1861 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Greene County was formed on December 9, 1811 from parts of Amite County, Franklin County and Wayne County. It was named after Nathanael Greene (1742-1786), a general in the American Revolutionary War.
