Gemünden, Rhein-Hunsrück

Gemünden is a municipality in the Rhein- Hunsrück district, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Kirchberg (Hunsrück ).

Geography

Gemünden is located on the southwestern edge of the Soon Forest, a part of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The place is located between Kirchberg in the northwest and Simmertal in the southeast. In Gemünden the Lametbach empties into the Simmersbach, which now continues to flow as Kellenbach towards the close. The village belongs to the northerly settlement Panzweiler.

History

For the first time the place is mentioned in 1304 in a document. The estate of the Counts of Sponheim gained municipal rights with attachment, judgment, and market. With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops, the place was French, 1815, he was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. Since 1946 it has been part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded.

Jewish Community

Under the protection of the taverns of Schmidtburg since about the year 1700 Jews lived in Gemünden. In the 19th century there were up to one-fifth of the inhabitants of the Jewish faith. The Jewish community had a synagogue ( destroyed in 1938 ), a school, a ritual bath and a cemetery, which is a protected monument today. The social life was marked by various clubs. After 1933, the Jewish community was gradually replaced on by emigration. The remaining Gemünden Jews were deported to the death camps until 1943, at least 22 people have fallen victim to the Holocaust.

The local council in Gemünden consists of 16 council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 of personalized proportional representation, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Culture and sights

Gemünden is also called "Pearl of the Hunsrück " because of its historic center and its exposed location in the valley by locals. Above the Simmer creek is the Gemünden castle on a mountain ridge. About two kilometers south of Gemunden is located on a 555 meter high mountaintop Soon the forest, the Koppensteiner height, the ruins of the castle Koppenstein, five kilometers east of it the old castle tower. Southwest of Gemünden rises the Lützelsoon.

Tourism

A 4 kilometer long geological trail begins and ends in Gemünden, 23 rock groups of the Hunsrück- Nahe area are shown and explained on display boards. Here, the trail is tangent to the 1873 Kaiser -developed pit where was mined until 1969 slate. The slate mining began in Gemünden early 19th century. The annual average 600 tons of shale were in Gemünden promoted and further processed up to 35 miners found work in the mines.

Gemünden is the starting point of the Schinderhannes Soonwaldsteig Bike Path after simmering.

Regular events

According to the old tradition of the fair date is set on the last weekend in July and the fire festival on the last weekend in August. The carnival is celebrated intensively with street processions, cap meetings and events for children.
