Mississippi Sea Wolves

The Mississippi Sea Wolves were an American ice hockey team from Biloxi, Mississippi. The team played from 1996 to 2005 and from 2007 to 2009 in the ECHL.

History

The Mississippi Sea Wolves were founded in 1996 as a franchise of the East Coast Hockey League. Their most successful season completed the team, as they claimed a second place in the Southwest Division in the playoffs initially had a bye in the 1998/99 season, before they order by beating the South Carolina Stingrays, Florida Everblades and Pee Dee Pride finals the Kelly Cup moved by just 4-3 victories prevailed in the best- of-seven series against the Richmond Renegades itself. In the series, Richmond had already located a 3-1 victory in front and also in Game 7 the decision was made only in overtime. In the following years the team was unable to build on this success. Only the 2001/02 season in which they lost to the later Kelly Cup champion Greenville Grrrowl until the fourth playoff round was similarly successful.

Hurricane Katrina caused severe damage in August 2005 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, the venue of the Sea Wolves, which then took two years of inactivity. Among other offices, locker rooms and an extensive hockey equipment, including the two Zambonis were destroyed. After extensive renovation work the game could start to season 2007/ 08. After the retreat from the ECHL had already been announced in March 2009, the management of the Sea Wolves announced in spring 2009 that the Mississippi Surge of the Southern Professional Hockey League settled a new franchise in Biloxi and will continue the tradition of the Sea Wolves.
