2008–09 FIS Cross-Country World Cup

The Cross Country World Cup in 2008/ 09 was organized by the FIS competition series, which began on November 22, 2008 in Gällivare and ended on March 22, 2009 in Falun. The highlight of the season was the 2009 Nordic World Ski Championships from February 19 to March 1, 2009 in Liberec.

In addition to the World Cup Tour de Ski was also held for the third time, a stage race, for it in case of victory was 400 World Cup points instead of the usual 100 points. In addition, for the second time the World Cup Final took place, also a stage race, the winner received 200 points.

The winner Dario Cologna ( Switzerland ) and Justyna Kowalczyk (Poland ) were each the first of their country; in Poland before not even a World Cup had taken place. For men secured Pietro Piller Cottrer from Italy and the Norwegian Ola Vigen Hattestad the Distance or Sprint World Cup, with the women were the Kowalczyk and Slovenian Petra Majdič. While in the Nation continued to dominate Norway, Finland and Italy followed behind, in the head but also sat down runners from far more long-term weaker countries such as Switzerland, Poland and Slovenia firmly.

Changes

Introduced in the last season the World Cup final at the end of the season has been extended by one stage on thus four stages. In contrast to last season were in addition to the Appreciation awarded World Cup points for each stage as in the Tour de Ski. However, only half the normal World Cup points were awarded for each stage. The winner of a stage thus received 50 World Cup points. The points received only athletes who have all the stages successfully disputed. The Tour de Ski is extended by a new team standings. For the Tour Team Cup, the two best men and the two best women counted per contest. The times have been added here. The team with the lowest overall time won the Tour Team Cup.
