Gibbons (automobile)

Gibbons & Moore was a British manufacturer of cyclecars, who was based in Chadwell Heath ( Essex ). The first four-wheeled Gibbons was born in 1914, but the series production was not until 1917 included. The model 1920 had the name Mark III. In 1929, production was discontinued.

Description

The car had an air-cooled engine mounted outside of the body, front right. The first car had a simple body with two side-by -side seats and a single-cylinder four -stroke engine from JAP with 4 hp ( 2.9 kW). The following models had different engines, including V-2 units. The motor drive to an intermediate shaft, which was mounted transversely in the car. This intermediate shaft was connected by means of belts with each of the two rear wheels, wherein the pulleys had different diameters and could be joined by couplings with the intermediate shaft. Was slowed with blocks on these pulleys.

The bodies were made ​​of plywood, and there was both seat assemblies next to each other and in tandem. The latter version was referred to as " sports model " and offered the front and rear position for an adult for a child.

There is also a Mark IV was advertised, which should be lighter than the Mark III. He had no doors and was powered by a two stroke engine.

For a while, the car could be purchased as a kit car, where plans were included to build. It was called " For five shillings with machined or non-machined parts available".

A four-seater model, the 10/25 hp with Blackburne -V2 engine was offered in 1925. A chain drive replaced the belt package, and there was a three-speed gearbox with reverse gear Sturmey - Archer. The rear wheels were fitted with drum brakes. In lighting there remained with acetylene, the headlight cost an extra cost. But the car was equipped with a retractable roof over the full length and with a disc at the rear for weather protection.

The exact production figures are not known, but contemporary promotional literature indicate that more than 1,000 copies had been built. Most cars were produced 1921-1926, but also in 1929 cars were still offered, which were then made ​​" custom made".
