Sant'Elia Fiumerapido

Sant'Elia Fiumerapido is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 6270 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 138 km southeast of Rome and 59 km southeast of Frosinone.

Geography

Sant'Elia Fiumerapido located in the north of the plain of Cassino above the river Rapido. The highest point of the municipality is Monte Bianco ( 1168 m) in the center of a pristine nature reserve. Sant'Elia is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle del Liri.

The districts are Portella, Olivella and Valleluce.

The nearby towns are Belmonte Castello, Cassino, Cervaro, Picinisco, San Biagio Saracinisco, Terelle, Vallerotonda and Villa Latina.

Traffic

Sant'Elia, is connected by state road 509 Forca d' Acero di, of Cassino in the Abruzzi to the road network. About it can also be reached in 12 km from junction of Cassino A 1 Autostrada del Sole.

History

Numerous archaeological findings from the occupation of the site since ancient times. The early medieval village of unknown name was destroyed by the Saracens in 866. 990 Abbot of Montecassino Mansone Sant'Elia new monastery build as a fortified place. It got its name from an eponymous chapel in the valley of the Rapido. Sant'Elia remained for the next 800 years in the possession of the monastery. Since the 15th century Sant'Elia was an important center of papermaking, mainly for the needs of Monte Cassino. Paper remained the most important product of the municipality until 1960 closed the last paper mill.

During the Battle of Monte Cassino most of the inhabitants fled to the mountains. Sant'Elia was severely damaged and about 400 dead were left behind. The destruction of infrastructure led to emigration and emigration.

Attractions
