Austria at the Olympics

Austrian athletes were represented in all Olympic Games of the modern era, with the exception of 1920 in Antwerp. In this case, the number of participants varied from 2 (1904 in St. Louis) to 183 (Berlin, 1936). Until 1918, as athletes from other parts of the Austrian part of the Austro- Hungarian Dual Monarchy in the Olympics participated.

With the exception of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964 and in London in 2012 succeeded in every part, at least to win a medal. With a total of 201 medals the focus is at the winter sports (especially skiing). This contrasts with 98 medals in summer sports and 9 in the art competitions. Austria is therefore next to Norway and Liechtenstein is one of only three countries that were successful in the Winter Games than in the Summer Games.

Orientations

So far, twice found Olympic Winter Games held in Austria. They were both times Winter Games in Innsbruck. In Innsbruck, the first Winter Olympic Youth Games in 2012 were held.

In the application of Salzburg at the 2010 Winter Games, the Austrian town on 2 July 2003 is excreted in the first round of voting. Four years later, on 4 July 2007, Salzburg failed again in the 1st round in the bid to host the Winter Games in 2014.

In some years, several Austrian cities for hosting Winter Games were interested. According to statutes of the IOC, a country can nominate more than one place as host. For the following applications therefore ended the application process with the national pre-selection:

Won the most medals has Felix Gottwald ( Nordic combined, 3 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze ) with seven Olympic medals. Four medals were won by Thomas Morgenstern ( ski jumping, 3 gold, 1 silver), Hermann Maier ( Alpine Skiing, 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Benjamin Raich ( Alpine skiing, 2 gold, 2 bronze), Mario Stecher ( Nordic combined, 2 gold, 2 bronze), Stephan Eberharter ( Alpine Skiing, 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze), Gregor Schlierenzauer ( ski jumping, 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), Martin Höllwarth ( ski jumping, 3 silver, 1 bronze), Marlies Schild ( Alpine Skiing, 3 silver, 1 bronze ) and Klaus Sulzenbacher ( Nordic combined, 1 silver, 3 bronze).

Successful Games

The most successful Olympic games for Austria were those of 2006 in Turin. The Austrian delegation won 9 gold medals and the seven - times silver and bronze. It is presented with Michaela Dorfmeister, Benjamin Raich, Felix Gottwald and Thomas Morgenstern four double Olympic champion. In medal of these Games, it was enough for Austria with 23 medals to a remarkable third place, behind Germany and the United States.
