IIHF European Cup 1990

The Hockey European Cup in the 1989/90 season was the 25th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1989; the final was played in February 1990. A total of 20 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the twelfth time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The national champion of the Game 1988/ 89 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was first played with a preliminary round in four groups of four in simple mode. Subsequently, eight teams played in two groups of four of the finalists. The final was played out -for- everyone in a group of four group winners and runners- round in the intermediate mode.

Tournament

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the European Cup was played out in four groups of 13 to 15 October 1989. The venues were Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Bern in Switzerland, Zagreb, SFR Yugoslavia and Frederikshavn in Denmark. The group winners reached the second round.

Group A

The matches of Group A were held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The games were held in the IJsbaan Valkenburg.

Group B

The matches of Group B were held in Bern, Switzerland. The games took place in the 16.464 -seat ice rink Allmendfeld.

* Due to the use of not eligible Canadian goalkeeper Ian Wood Puigcerdà -La -Molina was denied the gates actually two achieved.

Group C

The Group C matches were played in the Yugoslav Zagreb. The games were held in 6,300 -seat Cathedral Športová.

Group D

The Group D games were played in Frederikshavn, Denmark. The games were held comprehensive Isstadion in 2,490 spectators.

Second round

The second round of the European Cup was played in two groups of 17 to 19 November 1989. The venues were of Bern in Switzerland and Rosenheim in Germany. The four group winners of the preliminary round qualify to participate. The winners of the preliminary round group A and B, the Gunco Panda's Rotterdam and SC Bern played in the intermediate round group A; The winners of the preliminary round groups C and D, SB Rosenheim and IL Sparta Sarpsborg, took part in the intermediate round Group B.

Group A

The matches of Group A were held in Bern, Switzerland. The games took place in the 16.464 -seat ice rink Allmendfeld.

Group B

The matches of Group B were held in the German Rosenheim. The games were held comprehensive Marox Stadium in 7200 viewers.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 2 to 4 February 1990 at the German West Berlin.
