IIHF Continental Cup 2000

The IIHF Continental Cup 1999 was the third edition of the discharged by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF competition. On September 24, discharged to 28 December 1999 participated in this tournament 49 teams. The final round was held in the German capital Berlin from 26 to 28 December 1999.

A final round participants was set, the host Polar Bears Berlin. The other three finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

First round

Group A

The matches of Group A were held in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. A center was the 4600 -seat Winter Sports Palace, the home venue of HK Levski Sofia. The tournament was won by the SC Miercurea Ciuc from Romania, who won with three clear victories and reached the second qualifying round.

Group B

The tournament Group B was played in Nowy Targ. A center was the 3314 -seat Miejska Hala Lodowa, the home venue of Podhale Nowy Targ is. The tournament was won by the host club Podhale Nowy Targ, who won with three clear wins and a goal difference of 26:2 and reached the second qualifying round.

Group C

The tournament in Group C was held in the Romanian capital Bucharest. Venue of the tournament was the Mihai- Flamaropol arena that seats up to 8,000 spectators and home venue of the host CSA Steaua Bucharest. During the tournament, the host reached three clear victories against the other participants and moved so that in the second qualifying round.

Group D

The games in Group D were held in Hungary in 3500 Dunaújváros seater Dunaújvárosi Jégcsarnok. Group winner was the host Dunaferr SE Dunaújváros with three wins in three games. Thus, the Dunaferr SE reached the second qualifying round.

Group E

The tournament in Group E was held in Lyon, France. Venue was the Patinoire Charlemagne, which seats up to 4,200 spectators. During the tournament sat the host Lyon HC through with three wins and reached the second qualifying round.

Group F

The tournament Group F, which was held in Angers, France, was dominated by the host ASG Angers. The hosts won all three games, which took place in Patinoire du Haras, significantly, reaching the next qualifying round.

Second Round

Group G

The matches of the group G were fought in the Polish Oświęcim. As venue of the tournament, the Hala Lodowa Oświęcim was used, which has a capacity of 3,500 spectators. The tournament was won by the host Dwory S.S.A. Unia Oświęcim with three wins, which thus reached the third qualifying round.

Group H

The tournament of group H was held in Zvolen Slovak. As a venue the Zimný Štadión Zvolen was used, which provides up to 7038 spectators. The host HKm Zvolen reached as well as the HK Sokol Kiev two wins and one loss. Based on the obtained direct comparison of both teams, the HKm Zvolen prevailed and reached the next round.

Group J

The matches of the group J were in the 4000 -seat Pal agora in Milan, Italy discharged. Here sat the Reims HC from France with three wins in three games by reaching the third qualifying round. The German representative in the group eating mosquitoes, could only enter one win and thus left in the second round.

Group K

The tournament in Group K was held in the Hungarian Székesfehérvár. The host club, Alba Volán Székesfehérvár, achieved two wins and one loss. The Slovenian representative, the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, managed just one win and two draws - but he reached the same number of points as the host. Based on the obtained direct comparison to the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana won the day and reached the next round.

Group L

The matches of the group L were held in Cardiff, Wales. The HK Lada Togliatti sat down by 4-2 points and on the basis of better goal difference against the Nottingham Panthers, reaching the third round. After the Russian club first lost the first game with 6:8 against the Panthers, the team could then win 12:1 against Lyon HC and 8-2 against the Cardiff Devils.

Group M

In group M sat, surprisingly, by the Norwegian club Storhamar Dragons. The Dragons reached 4:2 points and thus placed on the first square in front of the Sheffield Steelers, HK Avangard Omsk of the Russian favorite and the ASG Angers.

Third Round

Group N

The games in Group N were held in the Czech Plzeň. The HKm Zvolen reached the first place and thus qualified for the final round. Could Zvolen against both its league rivals HC Košice as well as against the Polish club Dwory SSA Unia Oswiecim and lost only against guest giver HC Plzeň ceramics.

Group O

The tournament of group O was held in the two Swiss towns Ambri and Biasca in Ticino. The host HC Ambri -Piotta reached just as the Slovenian Club HDD Olimpija Ljubljana two you and a draw. Based on the obtained direct comparison of the two teams, the host HCAP prevailed and reached the final of the competition.

Group P

The tournament was won by the host group P Ak Bars Kazan with three clear victories against the other tournament participants. In order for the club from Kazan reached the final of the Continental Cup.

Final

The games of the final round took place in Berlin between 26 and 28 December 1999. Guest Imaging team was the finalist last year's polar bear Berlin, where all matches of the tournament were played in the Wellblechpalast.

Results

Thus, the HC Ambri -Piotta was during the host Polar Bears Berlin occupied under coach Larry Huras on goal difference for the second time in its history, winner of the IIHF Continental Cup, only the second place. In the game against the HKm Zvolen captain Marc Fortier was able to score the equalizer just three minutes before the final whistle, while the Polar Bears in the last tournament game offered the best performance and the Ak Bars Kazan beat 3-2.

The former goalkeeper of polar bears Berlin, Udo Doehler was honored by the IIHF at the best keeper of the tournament. Best defender was born in Sweden Leif Rohlin from HC Ambri -Piotta, who scored two goals in the final round. Furthermore, it was named the best striker Eduard Kudermetow by the Russian representative Ak Bars Kazan. He had scored two goals in seven games and six penalty minutes conceded.
