IIHF European Cup 1989

The Hockey European Cup in the 1988/89 season was the 24th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1988; the final was played in February 1989. A total of 18 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the eleventh time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1987/88 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was first played with a preliminary round in four groups of four in simple mode. The final was played in a group of four group winners of the preliminary round mode Free-for -All.

Tournament

Qualification

The qualifying matches were held on 2 and 9 October 1988 in Sofia, Jesenice, Edinburgh and Budapest. Four teams played in the return game, the two qualifiers for the free space in the preliminary round group A and D.

The HK Jesenice stzte itself against Slawia Sofia and qualified for the group D. Újpesti Dózsa Budapest defeated the Murrayfield Racers and thus got the right to start in Group A.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the European Cup was played between 16 and 20 November 1988, four groups. The venues were Esbjerg in Denmark, Nijmegen in the Netherlands, Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Austria and Porza in Switzerland. The winners of the qualification, Újpesti Dózsa Budapest from Hungary and HK Jesenice from the SFR Yugoslavia were eligible to participate in groups A and D.

Group A

The matches of Group A were held in Esbjerg, Denmark. The games took place in the 4,195 -seat Skøjtehal.

Group B

The matches of Group B were held in the Netherlands Nijmegen. The games were held in IJsstadium Heyendaal.

Group C

The Group C matches were played in the Austrian Klagenfurt. The games took place in the 5,500 -seat town hall.

Group D

The Group D games were played in the Swiss Porza. The games took place in the 8,700 -seat Pista la Resega.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 17 to 19 February 1989 at the German Cologne. The games were held comprehensive Ice Rink at the Lentstraße in 7,500 spectators.
