Sant'Andrea del Garigliano

Sant'Andrea del Garigliano is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 1549 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 144 km southeast of Rome, 66 km southeast of Frosinone and 87 km north- west of Naples.

Geography

Sant'Andrea del Garigliano is in the Aurunci at the foot of Monte Maio (940 m). The municipality extends to the river Garigliano which forms the border with Campania here.

Sant'Andrea is a member of the Comunità Montana L' Arco degli Aurunci.

The nearby towns are Castel Forte ( LT), Rocca d' Evandro (CE), Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano, Apollinare and Vallemaio.

History

The territory of Sant'Andrea was originally settled by the Oscans and was conquered in the 4th century BC by the Romans. The town itself dates back to a church of Sant'Andrea, built by the monks of Monte Cassino and was destroyed by the Saracens in 846. It was then rebuilt and center of a settlement. 1045 Abbot Richerio build a castle that came to the county Gaeta 1107.

1861 Sant'Andrea part of the province Terra del Lavoro of the Kingdom of Italy, until it came to the newly formed province of Frosinone, 1927. During World War II Sant'Andrea suffered in the battle for the Gustav Line severe destruction.
