IIHF Federation Cup 1996

The IIHF Federation Cup in 1995 was the second and final discharge of the material discharged by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF competition and was held in parallel to the European Cup. He was held between 7 October and 29 December 1995. A total of 19 teams took part from 18 countries, with Russia was represented as the only country with two participants. Unlike last year, also Western European hockey federations could be won.

During the following host the final tournament, HC Dukla Trenčín, set the other three participants were determined in qualifying tournaments. The last time winner of the Cup was AS Varese Hockey from Italy, which prevailed in the final surprising to both Trenčín and the Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

Qualification

Due to the increased number of participants compared to the previous year to qualify for the preliminary round tournaments in addition took place. Four of the six registered teams should play the group winners in a group à four teams from 6 to 8 October 1995. However, the tournament did not take place. The two remaining teams played on October 7, 1995, a crucial game for the second open space in the preliminary round.

Group A

In group A should determine the group winners from 6 to October 8, 1995 four teams. For the tournament, the SC Miercurea Ciuc, the HK Red Star Belgrade, Alba Volán Székesfehérvár and the HK Solvita Kaunas had reported. However, a discharge did not take place and thus the Romanian Miercurea Ciuc representative from reaching the group stage without a fight.

Group B

In Group B, the Slovenian representative HK Acroni Jesenice KHL Mladost met the Zagreb Croatia. With a 5-4 victory, Jesenice qualified for the group stage.

Preliminary round

The three preliminary round tournaments were held in Riga, Oświęcim and Varese on 10 and 11 November 1995. It played four teams per tournament. The winner of a tournament each received one of the three free starting places in the final tournament. For this he had to deny victorious both the semi-final and the final game of the tournament.

Group C

In Group C, which was played in the Latvian capital Riga, the defending champion Salavat Yulaev Ufa prevailed from Russia. They defeated both the Romanian Miercurea Ciuc qualifiers SC 12-1 in the semifinals and Vålerenga IF Oslo, the day before had prevailed against tournament hosts HK Nik's Brih Riga, in the final 5-2. Ufa thus secured the right to participate in the final round.

Group D

The discharged in Polish Oświęcim Tournament Group D saw the Russian team of HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk reach the final round. After a clear 9:1 victory over qualifier HK Acroni Jesenice they faced in the final Polimir Nawapolazk that had prevailed 4-1 against the hosts KS Unia Oświęcim. In the final, the team from the Urals won 6-1 against the White Russians and managed as a second Russian team to the finals.

Group E

The games in Group E were held in Varese, Italy. With the home advantage in the back of the host AS Varese Hockey could turn the HC Chamonix in the semifinals and beat in the final, surprisingly, the Czech club AC ZPS Zlín, who had gone as a favorite in the tournament and this with a 12:3 win over HK ATEK Kiev had underpinned in the semifinals.

Final round

The final round-robin tournament was held in Trenčín Slovakia on 28 and 29 December 1995. HC Dukla Trenčín addition to the host, the three group winners of groups A, B and C were qualified.

In the semifinals, first met the HC Dukla Trenčín for AS Varese Hockey and in a purely Russian duel last year's winner Salavat Yulaev Ufa at the Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
