List of track gauges

This list is intended to provide information on the different track gauges, which are found in rail traffic.

Usually specified on straight track as track width of the inner distance of the rail tracks. It measures the minimum dimension between the rail heads in the range between SO ( top of rail ) and 14 mm lower. Exceptions are narrow gauge railways (0-10 mm) and trams (0-9 mm below SO). However, since certain tracks, especially the French State Railways, the point of support measure, there may be variances. Through the Technical Unity of Railways of the vehicle crossing is easily to France despite different definition.

But vehicles of the same gauge can not necessarily run on the different routes because of the track width and the shape of the wheel flanges plays a role. This is especially the thickness of the flange crucial and which depend on inner wheel clearance, which may lie only in a narrow range, so that a reliable guidance is possible in frogs and check rails of turnouts and crossings.

In addition to gauge the various Fahrzeugumgrenzungsprofile prevent a permissive use, but with a smaller track width does not necessarily mean a narrower gauge.

Most gauges were originally set in feet & inches ( usually in the international ( English ) inch format ) and converted to mm.

  • Main gauges of a country are shown in bold type
  • Former track widths are shown in italics ( may mean that the web with a different gauge is still in operation)
