Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics

The XVIII. Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964 found 36 competitions take place in athletics.

The Olympic Stadium Tokyo had eight tracks, so the first eight participants were able to run in all disciplines to participate in the finals. In the throwing events, as well as in the long jump and the triple jump, however, only six athletes were admitted to the last three attempts.

In the second flow Herriott improved the Olympic record at 8:33,0 min, in the third lead to increased Aleksejūnas on 8:31,8 min. In the final, the world record holder Roelants ran from the front and improved his hand again the Olympic record.

In the qualification Gorchakova threw the spear at 62.40 meters, surpassing Ozoliņa world record by 1.02 meters.

Pentathlon

For the first time took place at the Olympic Games all-around for the Women. The five disciplines were discharged: 80- meter hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 200 -meter run.
