Boxing at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the 2012 Olympics in London 13 competitions are held in Boxing from July 28 to August 12, 2012 at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, three for women and ten men. Thus, women in boxing will fight for Olympic glory for the first time in the Olympic Games. The IOC decided at its meeting in Berlin on 13 August 2009, the inclusion of three women's competitions in the program, flyweight, welterweight and light heavyweight. For a weight class was canceled for the men with the featherweight.

Controversial judgments

For a real scandal was the struggle between the output bantamweight Japanese Satoshi Shimizu and Magomed Abdulhamidow from Azerbaijan. For although Shimizu had his opponent six times on the ground, Abdulhamidow was not down for the count and finally declared even to the point winner ( 22:17). Qualification

Qualification criteria

There are 286 athletes take part in the competitions, including 36 women and 250 men. Six quota places were reserved for the NOC of the host and 19 quota places will be at the invitation of the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur ( AIBA ) awarded to NOCs who could not achieve quota places after the completion of the qualifying phase. Per weight class, each NOC was allowed to nominate a maximum of athletes.

The only qualifying competition of the women were the World Championships in 2012, with the top eight athletes per weight class won a quota place, but only as part of a continental maximum rate. Africa had five quota places, America eight, eight Asia, Europe and Oceania twelve three. The World Championships were held from 9 to 20, 2012 in Qinhuangdao instead. Eleven quota places awarded the AIBA after the World Championships by invitation, a starting place was reserved for the host NOK, if no athlete would regularly qualify.

For men at the World Championships in Baku 92 quota places were awarded to the athletes in positions one to ten or positions one through six for the two heaviest weight classes in the first qualifying phase from 22 September to 10 October 2011. In the second qualifying phase 140 quota places were awarded in continental tournaments in the spring of 2012. Africa stood at World Championships and Continental Qualification total of 52 quota places to America 54, Asia 56, Europe 78 and Oceania ten. Five quota places were also awarded for the first time in May 2011 at the World Series of Boxing (WSB). After completion of the continental qualifying competitions the AIBA awarded seven quota places by invitation.

Overview qualified NOCs

The five quota places awarded in the WSB, won the associations of Algeria, France, Italy, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. The associations had set, they take in what weight class Olympic quota place in the claim due to differences in the classification of weight classes. Per invitation received in June 2012 among women in Brazil, Bulgaria, North Korea, China, the USA, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Romania, Kenya and Canada as well as in the men's Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Montenegro, Honduras, Panama, Angola and Iraq each have a starting place. Burkina Faso and Mali gave their quota places back to the world governing body AIBA, the starting positions were reassigned to Cameroon and Niger.
