Nettuno

Nettuno is an entity belonging to the province of Rome in the Italian community Lazio with 45 826 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The once little important fishing settlement on the Tyrrhenian Sea and is now regarded as a seaside resort.

History

The name of the place goes back to the god Neptune, which was said to be consecrated at the site of the present church of San Giovanni a temple. In the 9th century are said to have lived here for Saracens. On the still visible today ancient port of Torre Astura was built in the 12th century. The city walls still partially preserved today were added in the 1501 to 1503 the Papal States belonging harbor by a bastioniertes Fort, designed by Giuliano da Sangallo. 1594 was the place from the possession of the monks of Grottaferrata over to the Pope.

1902 was buried the Saint Maria Goretti in Nettuno and 1929 transferred to the Marian shrine, where she now rests in the crypt.

During World War II, the city was fiercely contested and suffered heavy damage. On 22 January 1944, the area of Nettuno scene of Operation Shingle, the amphibious landing operation of the Allies. On the operation was mainly the VI. American Corps under Major General John P. Lucas involved. American objective was to bypass the main German defensive line in central Italy, thus to speed up the march on Rome. The operation and the following battles are also referred to as the Battle of Anzio - Nettuno, in which the 29 ss - Waffen Grenadier Division of the Allies inflicted heavy losses.

Alessio Chiavetta (PD ) was elected in April 2008 to the mayor. His center-left alliance also with 18 of 30 seats, the majority in the City Council.

Sports

The football player Bruno Conti was born in 1955 in Nettuno, which is also called the city of football. The Americans are said to have brought in the Second World War the baseball to Nettuno; the team of the club Danesi Nettuno is now considered one of the best in Italy.

Economy

The well-known white wine Cacchione is obtained from the Bellone Vine. Also, agriculture and food processing also play an important role.

Since 1974, Nettuno is connected to Traunreut as a partner city, as with Corinaldo, the birthplace of Maria Goretti.
