Palombara Sabina

Palombara Sabina is a municipality in the province of Rome in the Italian region Latium, 12,306 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Palombara located 36 km northeast of Rome and 17 km north of Tivoli. The village lies at the foot of Monte Gennaro on the western edge of the Lucretili. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Sabini e Tiburtini. The regional Parco naturale the Lucretili has its headquarters in Palombara.

The old town of Palombara lies on a round hill and grouped around the great medieval castle of the Savelli. The municipality also includes the villages Cretone and Stazzano.

The municipality covers an altitude 25-1271 m slm

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (medium endangered).

The nearby towns are Guidonia Monte Celio, Mentana, Monteflavio, Monte Libretti, Monterotondo, Moricone, San Polo dei Cavalieri and Sant'Angelo Romano

Traffic

The State Road 636 connects Palombara with Tivoli and the A24 highway, driveway Tivoli. The Via Palombarese leads, however, since ancient times directly to Rome. The station Palombara - Marcellina (10 km away from the town) is located on the railway line Rome - Avezzano.

History

1029 castrum Palombarum was first mentioned. 1276 was the domination of the Savelli family. In 1556 the town was sacked by the troops of the Duke of Alba and partially burned the castle.

Policy

Paolo Della Rocca was elected in April 2005 to the mayor and re-elected in 2010. His civil list represents 13 local councils the majority over 7 local councils of the center-left alliance.

Coat of arms

On a blue shield three yellow mountains on the tip of a white dove with an olive branch in its beak sitting. It is a canting arms because the name Palombara from the Latin Palumba is derived for a dove.

Attractions

  • The oldest part of the Castello Savelli is the tower from the 9th century. In the Castello are still frescoes of the 16th century to visit from the Raphael school. The castle is now a natural history museum is housed.
  • Northeast of the village is the impressive ruins of the Castello Castiglione, which was first mentioned in 1276.
  • The Basilica of San Giovanni in Argentella belongs to a now abandoned Benedictine abbey. They preserved their buildings of the Romanesque (10th - 11th century ) still essentially.

Specialty

Palombara is known for its cherries. Early June, takes place every year Sagra delle the Cerase, the Cherry Festival instead.
