After winning the title in the team time trial on Sunday, Tony Martin on Wednesday took his second World Cup in 2012, in which he repeated his victory of 2011. 58 drivers took part in rainy and windy weather on the 44.6 km long route from Heerlen to Valkenburg, on the Bundersberg and the Cauberg two slopes had to be overcome. With the Swiss Olympic champion in 2008 and four times world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara and the British time trial Olympic champion of 2012 Bradley Wiggins was two favorites, so that Martin initially feared only the Spaniard Alberto Contador, Vuelta winner of 2012, as closest rivals. This proved to be fast as unfounded, because after 31 kilometers, Martin, who had been sent as the last in the race, overtaking the Spaniard started two minutes before him. As a stubborn opponent instead proved the 22 -year-old U.S. drivers Taylor Phinney. This was 14.3 four seconds faster than Martin at the first time check at kilometer. Only after about 30 kilometers, the German was 14 seconds in front of the U-23 World Champion of 2010. Shortly before the end of the lead had shrunk to eight seconds, and Phinney came again hope for, as Martin hard at the two slopes was doing. Finally, the defending champions handed a lead of five seconds prior to re Phinney World Cup. Martin's comment: "I had to give 110 percent, in the end I was totally exhausted. That was one of the hardest finals in my career. That was the first highlight of the season, in which I was able to walk in perfect condition. " The other two German competitors Patrick Gretsch ( 27 ) and former world champion Bert grave shaft ( 36 ) disappointed.
