Christianity in Africa

In Ethiopia and Eritrea today's Christianity under King Ezana Aksum in what was then the state religion was raised already in the fourth century. Through the trading posts of the Europeans and the colonization of the continent Christianity came from the fifteenth century to Africa. The mission churches and the independent African churches played the dominant role.

Between 37 and 41 % of the African population belong to Christian denominations (including Copts ). The majority of African Christians living in the eastern, central and southern Africa.

Early missionary

Christianity spread in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea early on due; in the fourth century Ethiopia, Alexandria and Egypt have been Christianized.

First encounters between the Portuguese and Black Africa (tropical Africa? ) Found in 1450 instead (see Portuguese colonial history ). The first missionary work began in the early sixteenth century in the Congo region. Jesuits, Dominicans, Augustinians and French missionaries tried since 1624 - in vain - to evangelize the east coast of Africa. Beginning of the nineteenth century had disappeared virtually all traces of these missionary efforts.
