James Thomas Heflin

James Thomas Heflin ( born April 9, 1869 in Louina, Randolph County, Alabama, † April 22, 1951 in La Fayette, Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party). He was the nephew of Congressman Robert parking Heflin and the uncle of U.S. Senator Howell Heflin.

Career

James Thomas Heflin attended a community school in Randolph County. Then he went to Southern University in Greensboro and the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College in Auburn. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced practice in La Fayette.

Heflin was 1893-1894 Mayor of La Fayette. Then he was from 1894 until his resignation in 1896 register on the Chancery. After that, he was 1896-1900 Member of the House of Representatives of Alabama. He took 1901 as a delegate to participate in the Constituent Assembly of Alabama. Then he was from 1902 until his resignation in 1904 Executive Officer ( Secretary of State ).

Heflin was elected to the 58th Congress, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the death of Charles Winston Thompson. He was reelected to the eight succeeding U.S. Congresses. Heflin worked in the U.S. House of Representatives from 19 May 1904 until his resignation on November 1, 1920, to run for the U.S. Senate. During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he had presided over the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions ( 62 Congress ).

Heflin was elected on November 2, 1920 in the U.S. Senate, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the death of John H. Bankhead ( 1842-1920 ). Whose term of office would have expired on March 3, 1925. Heflin was re-elected in 1924, but suffered his second reelection attempt a defeat, as well as several other options for the U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate. He served in the U.S. Senate on November 3, 1920 to March 3, 1931.

Then he went 1936-1937 employment as a special assistant of the United States Attorney General in Alabama after. He was also 1935-1936 and again 1939-1942 Special Representative of the Federal Housing Administration. After that he went into retirement.
