Carona, Lombardy

Carona is a comune in the Province of Bergamo in the Italian region Lombardy with 357 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Geography

Carona is in the upper Brembanatal 53 km north of the provincial capital city of Bergamo and 80 km northeast of the city of Milan. It belongs to the Comunità Montana Valle Brembana as well as the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. Districts are Porta, Fiumenero and Pagliari.

The neighboring municipalities are Branzi, Caiolo (SO), Foppolo, Gandellino, Piateda (SO), Valbondione, Valgoglio and Valleve.

Attractions

  • The San Gottardo church ( patron saint of landslides and avalanches ). Despite continuing population decline, the church and about half of all houses in the area have recently been renovated.
  • The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the 15th century. Inside, there are three altars with stucco and frescoes of high value, created by local artists.
  • The church of San Giovanni Decollato, which was consecrated in 1450.
