James Carr (Massachusetts politician)

James Carr ( born September 9, 1777 Bangor, Massachusetts, † August 24 1818 in the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky ) was an American politician. Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Born in present-day Maine James Carr was the son of Congressman Francis Carr ( 1751-1821 ). He attended the common schools and later served for some time on the USS Crescent. For two years he served in Algiers as secretary of the local American consul. After his return, Carr worked in the Maine District of the State of Massachusetts in the trade. He was a member of the Federalist Party. Between 1806 and 1811 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. In the congressional elections of 1814 he was in the 17th electoral district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Abiel Wood on March 4, 1815. Until March 3, 1817, he was able to complete a term in Congress.

James Carr died on August 24, 1818 under dramatic circumstances. He was on board a steamboat on the Ohio. Below Louisville his nine year old daughter fell overboard into the river. Carr jumped after her to save her. This attempt failed. Both James Carr and his daughter were killed; their bodies were never found.
