Robert Charles Winthrop

Robert Charles Winthrop ( born May 12, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, † November 16, 1894 ) was an American politician and from 1847 to 1849 the 22 Speaker of the House. He was also from 1850 to 1851 Senator for the state of Massachusetts.

Early years

Winthrop attended the Boston Latin School and completed his schooling in 1828 at Harvard University from. Then he learned the profession of lawyer under Daniel Webster and was built in 1831 approved by the Bar Association. From 1835 to 1840 he was in the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, from 1838 to 1840, he was also the Speaker of the House.

Policy

Winthrop was elected to succeed the retiring MPs Abbott Lawrence as a Member of the Whigs in the 26th Congress, in which he consequently entered on November 9, 1840 and was also confirmed at the next election. Before the end of his tenure, he stepped back, however, on 25 May 1842. He was succeeded by Nathan Appleton, but resigned even before the end of the term. When it convened reelection Winthrop had erected again and joined the Congress only a few months after his resignation again at. He served this for four successive terms, in the elections of 28, he was again elected to Congress 31, the 30th Congress, he was Speaker of the House (December 6, 1847 - March 4, 1849 ). During the current term of office he resigned on July 30, 1850, to the office of senator offered him to accept, which was become vacant after his former trainer Daniel Webster resigned from this office. He served in the Senate only July 30, 1850 to February 1, 1851 because he was not re-elected. He also presented himself unsuccessfully for election of the governor of Massachusetts in the same year and was sitting a year later in the Electoral College, the body of electors, which comes together after the presidential election to choose the president.

Later years

After his departure from politics, he engaged until his death for charitable purposes. The Winthrop University was named after him because he donated money, which led to the opening of the school. He died on 16 November 1894 in his hometown of Boston and is located in the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts buried.

  • His parents were Thomas Lindall Winthrop (1760-1841) and Elizabeth Bowdoin Temple (1769-1825)
  • He married on March 12, 1832 his wife Elizabeth Cabot Blanchard ( 1809-1842 ) and had three children with her.
  • He is the great-great- grandfather of U.S. Senator and presidential candidate of the Democratic Party in the 2004 election, John Kerry.
