Biggest surprise of the first round of this year's World Cup was the withdrawal of defending champion Neil Robertson against Judd Trump. However, the 21 -year-old youth players had ever been working for the past five professional seasons in the world rankings and with the victory at the China Open just before the World Cup, his breakthrough was succeeded in the top. In addition, still surprised the brief departure of the former world number two Stephen Maguire against Barry Hawkins. Of the seeded players also stepped down from even Ricky Walden and Marco Fu, who thus lost both their place among the top 16. Stephen Hendry went after his opening win over Joe Perry, however, for the 24th time in a row as one of the best 16 players in the world in a new season. The World Cup rookies Andrew Pagett and Jimmy Robertson succeeded as no surprise and both eliminated in the first round. In particular, Robertson had no chance against a convincing Mark Selby and lost 1:10.

Selby was as Ding Junhui after the performance shown as a tournament favorite, both met in the quarterfinals, who won the Chinese. With Judd Trump and Martin Gould met in round 2 of the players to each other, which had thrilled by their offensive, risky game, the audience at the start of most, but Gould often played too risky and subject to the young Englishman, who by many spectacular balls and sovereign Game was despite the new experience for him in the advanced rounds in Sheffield in the sequel to the star of the tournament. Even the world ranking Ninth Graeme Dott defeated Trump clearly in the quarterfinals, before it came with Ding Junhui to the semi-final duel. There is an alternating play developed. As Trump with three frames was the first time 7-4 in front, followed by a series of six frame wins in a row for thing that unimpressed countered the Englishman with four wins in succession. After the 14:13 lead at the Chinese Trump then made with three consecutive wins into the finals perfect.

In the second half of the set list of Welsh Mark Williams moved with wins over Ryan Day, Jamie Cope and Mark Allen sovereign semi-finals and was thus already established as a new world ranking number one. His predecessor on the top position, the Scot John Higgins, met in the quarterfinals on snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan. This occurred after a moderate season in great shape and has been given a better set off the Shaun Murphy. Although Higgins playing in the tournament could not quite convince, but he proved to be the tougher and more stubborn players from both and became the semi-final opponent of Williams. It evolved again a tough match in which Williams could pull it on up to three frames, but Higgins countered again and again and remained in the game. The turning point came when the Scot a 9:11 could turn into a 13:11 lead. Then Williams did not succeed in balancing more and Higgins stood for a 17:14 in the final.

The finale showed parallels to the semi-finals. After a balanced start to the 7:7 Judd Trump could work out a three- frames - projection, which held up to 12:9. Then followed a period of weakness that Higgins used to 14:12. Although the young Englishman leveled again, he lost in the course of the game a bit of precision and be risky game was no longer rewarded. Instead, the beharrlichere, solid game of Higgins prevailed, which proved the most staying power and secured his fourth with 18:15 World Championship title.
