Districts of Ghana

The districts of Ghana, as the hot districts in Ghana were reorganized several times since the country's independence. The delineation of districts often happened in the tension of unknown ethnic boundaries, areas of traditional political authorities ( " Paramouncies " ) and party politics. The mid-1980s, there were 65 partially in " Subdistrikte " divided districts in Ghana. In 1985, the then President Jerry Rawlings announced a new policy of decentralization and democratization. Under the slogan "bring the government to the people ," the number of districts was doubled to 110, in which locally based administrative units the local government should take over. The responsibility of government should be so divided and opposed the rapidly increasing corruption in public offices. To determine the districts were three criteria. A newly formed district should - in rural areas - not less than 50 000 inhabitants have to be economically viable and have a certain level of infrastructure.

During the next 28 years additional districts have been established by further division of the original districts. 2007 were added a further 33 districts, so that there are now 170 districts in Ghana. More specifically, form 124 " Districts ", 40 " municipals " and 6 " Metropolitans " the administrative level below the regions of Ghana.
