Marty Meehan

Martin Thomas " Marty " Meehan ( born December 30, 1956 in Lowell, Massachusetts) is an American lawyer and politician. Currently, Meehan Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

Biography

Meehan, the eldest of seven children of a Catholic family, attended school in Lowell and graduated from Lowell High School, which he finished in 1974. Then he went to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. There he received a Bachelor of Science in 1978. Meehan went on to study further at Suffolk University and the local Law School, where he attained a doctorate in law. Already during his studies to Meehan engaged politically. From 1978 to 1979 he was active in the support team for the mayor of Lowell. From 1979 to 1981 he was spokesman James Shannon. After finishing his law degree from Suffolk University Law School Meehan was from 1986 to 1990 served as Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth and Deputy Secretary of State for Securities and Corporations. From 1987 to 1988 Meehan was employed as a member of the faculty of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell at Harvard Law School. In the years 1991 and 1992, Meehan was First Assistant District Attorney for Middlesex County.

In 1992, the Democrat Meehan in the parliamentary elections a deputy seat in the House of Representatives of the United States. In January 1993, he took up his mandate. In the coming years, Meehan were each re-elected. Meehan argued for a reform of election campaign financing in the United States ( Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act ) in Congress. He also campaigned for a repeal of the military service instructions Do not ask, do not tell and advocated the full approval of homosexual soldiers to the armed forces.

On 1 July 2007 Meehan resigned his seat in Congress and was chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. He is married to Ellen T. Murphy since 1996; they have two children.
