Ottawa 67's

The Ottawa 67 's are a Canadian ice hockey team from Ottawa, Ontario. The team was founded in 1967 as a junior team and plays in one of the three highest Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League ( OHL ).

History

On February 16, 1967, the City of Ottawa by the Ontario Hockey Association was awarded an expansion franchise. In June, it was agreed to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state in the name of 67 's. Among the three businessmen, who had managed to bring Junior Hockey back to Ottawa, was also the former NHL star Bill Cowley. After had played in the Canadian capital in the 1950s and 1960s, the Ottawa Junior Canadiens and the Hull- Ottawa Canadiens, since 1963 a gap in the sports scene of the city was born.

Their first game lost the 67 's on October 6, 1967, 0:9 against the Niagara Falls Flyers. Since the new building was still under construction, the team played its first eleven home games in the sister city of Hull.

1972 was not allowed to participate automatically in the finals for the Memorial Cup hosts. The team narrowly missed out on qualification. It was the great stroke of luck in the history of the team, as you in 1974 with Brian Kilrea undertook a young coach who was traveling in the Minor Leagues as a player and usually had only made it to 26 games in the NHL.

In the following decade, he formed a successful team, which was three times the OHA finals, and after a final defeat in 1977, then in 1984 finally won the first Memorial Cup. Kilrea was thus thrust into the limelight and accepted an offer from the NHL. The New York Islanders committed him as assistant coach. After the following two seasons were successful either for him or for the 67 's, he returned to Ottawa. The next eight years were not as successful as his first term. In 1994 he retired and Peter- John Lee took over the team.

A year later, Kilrea took over for the third time as coach and also became general manager. This time also stood again soon successes. 1999 we hosted the Memorial Cup and was able to keep the trophy in the city. In 2001 and 2005, qualified you for the final tournament. Both times it was but a chance. The now well over 70 years old Kilrea still stands behind the band of the 67 's.
