Road running
The road race is a group of disciplines of track and the Running sport and is defined as a long-distance running, which does not take place on a track, but on a measured distance outside of a stadium. As the name says, it is run mainly on asphalted surface ( otherwise it is called cross, trail or forest runs).
For the purposes of the German Athletics Federation ( DLV), the road running adjacent additionally from the fun run, by narrower Participation ( possession of a start pass, no pronounced by the Association lock), one from a DLV Accredited Professionals measured distance and the application of event at the DLV as a road run. Pure road runs are rarely organized because of the increased effort and reduced number of participants as fun runs and are mostly high-class sporting events ( championships, international competitions ). Contrast, more common is a combined elementary and road running.
Since 1992, organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations ( IAAF) a year, the World Half Marathon Championships, which were renamed in 2006 and 2007 as a road race World Championships.

Standard routes
The IAAF performs best and record lists over 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, half marathon ( 21.0975 km ), 25 km, 30 km, Marathon ( 42.195 km ) and 100 km. Is a prerequisite for a leaderboard ability that the track length was determined by an accredited surveyor with a Jones Counter and that a possible gap between start and finish is less than 1 ‰ of the total distance. For the recognition of a time as a world record, it is also necessary that the start and finish apart located no more than 50% of the total distance and the length of the route will be promptly re-examined by an accredited surveyor. World Records on links be accepted provided that these same conditions and the athlete finished their runs over the entire distance.
Popular distances, the IAAF created on the no leaderboard, 5 km, 8 km (or 5 miles), 12 km, 10 miles ( 16.1 km ) and 50 km.
Road races with IAAF Label
The IAAF has been giving end of 2007, a series of road races a Road Race Label (currently in grades of Gold, Silver and Bronze). With this award, events are considered to meet the organizational requirements such as distance measurement, safety, medical care and provision of information to the media. Decisive criterion for classification in gold, silver or bronze is the number of participating top athletes and the extent of international TV coverage.
