Uzemain

Uzemain is a commune with 1146 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal and Canton Xertigny.

Geography

The municipality Uzemains is an average of 320 meters above sea level and extends from the valley of the upper Coney up to the high plateau of Voge, which forms a portion of the watershed between the catchment areas of Saône / Rhône and Moselle / Rhine.

The 27.3 km ² large municipality covers next to the main town Uzemain the districts of La Xatte, Le Roulon, Les Forges d' Uzemain, Méloménil, Naymont and Thièlouze. The Canal des Vosges passes through the west of the municipality and leaves in Les Forges d' Uzemain the Côneytal still rising in the north to the summit level. Uzemain is located in an agricultural area of arable and meadow land in northeastern forests are predominant.

Neighboring communities of Uzemain are Girancourt in the north, Renauvoid in the northeast, Uriménil in the east, in the southeast Hadol, Xertigny in the south, Charmois - l'Orgueilleux in the west and Dommartin- aux- Bois in the northwest.

History

1790 formed the villages Uzemain -les Forges and Uzemain la Rue from existing small hamlets. From the merger of the two villages was in 1839 by royal decree, the current community Uzemain.

In the 18th century Uzemain succeeded by his wealth and firewood near the Burgundian ore one of the sites of the iron industry in the Voge - region, 20 km away, Bains- les- Bains was home at that time even the largest iron manufactory Lorraine.

Demographics

With 1096 inhabitants ( 2006) Uzemain is the fourth largest municipality in the canton Xertigny. Since 1975 Uzemain can record a continuous population growth.

Economy and infrastructure

Uzemain until today (represented by the Coopérative agricole ) a predominantly shaped by farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding community. Has a long tradition, the production of spirits in the environment to which today remembers the building of an old distillery. In addition to some small craft and catering businesses in the Rue du Coney a factory established that manufactures decorative tapes. Some employed workers commute to the surrounding larger towns.

1999, a new school for 140 pupils was built in the community.

The leading through the village streets department 44 and 51 connect with Uzemain Epinal and the surrounding communities. The nearest railway station is located in the small town seven kilometers away Xertigny on the railway line Nancy- Belfort.
