Portieux

Portieux is a commune in the Vosges department in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal, in the canton of charm and founded the 1999 Local Government Association Moyenne Moselle.

Geography

The 1319 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) scoring Portieux municipality is situated on the Moselle of the northern Vosges, about 20 kilometers north- west of Epinal.

The Moselle flows into southeast-northwest direction through the municipal area, the nucleus Portieux is on the right side of the Moselle. Also, a portion of the parallel to the Moselle Canal des Vosges with three of its 93 locks is with a brief interruption in the area of Portieux or forms the border with Vincey. History

The place Portieux ( Portus coelorum ) developed around a priory founded in 1107 near a ford over the River Moselle, which was relocated in 1616 to Nancy ( Monastery of St. Leopold ).

A privilege to build a glassworks in the woods near Portieux, was issued in 1705 by Duke Leopold. The recent history of Portieux is narrow ( = German glassworks ) connected to the glassmaking factory in the district of La Verrerie; glass production has also influenced the design of the coat of arms.

The glassware production adapted itself over the decades to the needs of the market. Were at the start of the glassworks drinking glasses and window glass in the foreground, was soon followed by mirrors, glass bottles, clocks and lamp glasses and glass marbles. A huge boom took the glass factory with the production of bottles for bottling of mineral water from Contrexévillenear (brand Contrex ). In 1850, a worker could produce up to 400 bottles per hour. A glass factory in Gironcourt -sur- Vraine, which is closer to Contrexévillenear and Vittel, produced in 1964 already 250 million bottles annually.
