Portieux

Portieux is a commune in the Vosges department in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal, in the canton of charm and founded the 1999 Local Government Association Moyenne Moselle.

4.1 Road Access

Geography

The 1319 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) scoring Portieux municipality is situated on the Moselle of the northern Vosges, about 20 kilometers north- west of Epinal.

The Moselle flows into southeast-northwest direction through the municipal area, the nucleus Portieux is on the right side of the Moselle. Also, a portion of the parallel to the Moselle Canal des Vosges with three of its 93 locks is with a brief interruption in the area of Portieux or forms the border with Vincey. For built-up area of Portieux west of the channel includes the breakpoint Vincey on the railway line Nancy- Epinal - Remiremont.

140 hectares or nearly a fifth of the municipal land area is forested ( Forêt de Ternes ).

To Portieux near the hamlet of Belval part of the district of La Verrerie four kilometers east of the nucleus.

Neighboring communities of Langley Portieux are in the north, Damas -aux -Bois in the northeast, Moriville in the east, Châtel- sur -Moselle and Nomexy in the southeast and Vincey the southwest and west.

History

The place Portieux ( Portus coelorum ) developed around a priory founded in 1107 near a ford over the River Moselle, which was relocated in 1616 to Nancy ( Monastery of St. Leopold ).

A privilege to build a glassworks in the woods near Portieux, was issued in 1705 by Duke Leopold. The recent history of Portieux is narrow ( = German glassworks ) connected to the glassmaking factory in the district of La Verrerie; glass production has also influenced the design of the coat of arms.

The glassware production adapted itself over the decades to the needs of the market. Were at the start of the glassworks drinking glasses and window glass in the foreground, was soon followed by mirrors, glass bottles, clocks and lamp glasses and glass marbles. A huge boom took the glass factory with the production of bottles for bottling of mineral water from Contrexévillenear (brand Contrex ). In 1850, a worker could produce up to 400 bottles per hour. A glass factory in Gironcourt -sur- Vraine, which is closer to Contrexévillenear and Vittel, produced in 1964 already 250 million bottles annually. While the glassworks Portieux 1968 had still 539 employees worked in 1978 308 employees there. After further gradual decline in 1996 from the traditional manufacturing a glass factory with 33 workers and employees who shrank to 12 employees in 2005. Today, Crystal glasses - mostly individual pieces - made according to special customer requirements.

Demographics

The continuing population decline since the 1960s due to the decline of the textile industry and the glass production.

Economy and infrastructure

In addition to small craft and retail shops (bakery, automotive trade ), there are few employment opportunities in Portieux. Many residents commute to the surrounding commercial areas after Thaon- les -Vosges, Epinal Golbey or. One of the largest employers in the city is CAT Belval, a product derived from a farm nursing home / hospice in the district of Belval.

Transport links

By Portieux the Territory road 32 leads from Rambervillers to Châtel -sur -Moselle. The two-lane national highway 57 from Nancy to Epinal leads to a connection point by the municipality of the neighboring Vincey. The breakpoint Vincey is located on the Moselle valley, following the railway line Nancy- Epinal - Remiremont, which is operated by the Company TER Lorraine.
