Harsault

Harsault is a commune with 396 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal, in the canton of Bains- les- Bains and the Local Government Association, founded in 2006 ( Communauté de communes ) Val de Voge.

Geography

Harsault is situated at an average altitude of 375 m above sea level, 9 km north- west of Bains- les -Bains, 24 km south-west of Epinal in the south of Lorraine.

The 10.85 km ² large municipality in the Voge is bordered to the east by the coney, a tributary of the upper Saône. By the Ruisseau des Cailloux Harsault, which flows to the east of the town on the Canal des Vosges and on his four- kilometer run through the municipal area has a slope of 100 meters flows. The channel runs immediately west parallel to the Coney. On the four kilometer channel section through the municipality of Harsault are four locks. In the northwest, a strip of the municipality extends the Caillouxtal up right up to the boundary of the municipality Vioménils. Southwest of Hautmougey the relief rises above a ground level on the plateau of the Grand Bois. This is achieved with 443 meters above sea level, the highest point of the municipality.

The area around Harsault is partly used as arable land, partly as pasture, while in the southwest ( Bois de Mont Roche), to the east ( les Chavanes ) and to which up to 60 meters high river slopes are predominantly woods, which cover a total of a quarter of the community area.

To Harsault include the districts of La Forge de Thunimont and Thunimont.

Neighboring communities of Harsault are Charmois - l'Orgueilleux in the north, La Chapelle- aux- Bois and Les Voivres in the east, Hautmougey in the south, Gruey -lès- Surance the southwest, La Haye in the west and Vioménil in the West.

History

The name Harsault can be first detected in the 14th century. Until the French Revolution, the territory of the present municipality was part of the Bailiwick of Vesoul in Franche -Comté, changed in 1790 in the newly formed Canton of Bains- les -Bains, the then district Darney. 1776, the church of Saint- Gengoult was built.

A long tradition had the metallurgy in the community. In the district of La Forge de Thunimont ( la Forge = the blacksmith ) today are factory buildings of usine Thunimont. The equipment of the metal factory which was founded in 1725, included two Metallscheideöfen, a hammer mill and a wire drawing. 1785 had the metal work of 16 employees in 1802 already 40 employees. The decline in Erzfunde around 1860 led to the closure of the plant. In the workshops then subjected to a cotton spinning and weaving, and there arose a tenement buildings around the factory. The textile mill was a small port in the construction of the Canal des Vosges. After the decline of the textile industry in the 1970s, the factory was rebuilt to accommodate several stores therein were ( among other baby store, real estate office). Today, the whole of the former factory site is shut down.

Population

The population Harsaults has stabilized after a slump in the 1970s and 1980s.

Attractions

  • Church Saint- Gengoult with altar of wood and stone, side altars, hexagonal pulpit, confessionals and wooden statues from the 18th century. Multiple objects are characterized as a monument historique.

Economy and infrastructure

The residents of Harsault are chiefly engaged in agriculture (cereals cultivation, dairy farming ), employed in forestry and small service businesses in the town or the surrounding area.

Transport links

The community Harsault is off the national traffic flows. The Department of Road 164 Neufchâteau about Contrexévillenear, Darney, Bains- les- Bains to Saint -Loup- sur- Semouse through the southern neighboring communities Hautmougey and Gruey -lès- Surance. The nearest train station ( Bains- les- Bains ) is situated 14 kilometers southeast of Harsault.
