Ed Whitfield

Wayne Edward "Ed" Whitfield ( born May 25, 1943 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky ) is an American politician. Since 1995 he represents the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Ed Whitfield visited until 1961 the Madisonville High School. Then he studied until 1965 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Then he graduated from the Wesley Theological Seminary and the American University in Washington DC After studying law at the University of Kentucky and his 1969 was admitted to the bar he began to work in this profession. From 1967 to 1973 Whitfield was also a member of the Reserve of the United States Army. In addition, he was a businessman in the private sector. From 1991 to 1993 he acted as advisor of Edward Philbin, the chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Whitlfield first joined the Democratic Party. Between 1973 and 1975 he sat as their representative in the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In the congressional elections of 1994, but was then elected as a Republican in the first electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of him previously defeated Democrat Tom Barlow on January 3, 1995. After he was confirmed in each case in the following midterm elections, Whitfield can exercise his mandate until today. His current term of office runs until January 3, 2013. He is a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and in three of its subcommittees. Within the party he belongs to the more moderate Republican Main Street Partnership.

Whitfield is committed to military matters, as well as coal and nuclear power plants. He is a shareholder in the oil industry. Ed Whitfield is married. His wife Constance was formerly State Secretary at the U.S. Department of Interior.
