Prairie County (Arkansas)
The Prairie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Des Arc.
Geography
The County is located in east-central Arkansas and has an area of 1,750 square kilometers, of which 77 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
The Prairie County was formed on November 25, 1846 from parts of Monroe County and Pulaski County. It was named after the characteristic prairie land throughout the County.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Prairie County, 9,539 people in 3,894 households and 2,795 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 84.83 percent White, 13.71 percent Black or African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, and 0.28 percent from other races; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 0.81 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,894 households out of which 30.6 per cent of children or young people under the age of 18 who lived with them. 56.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households were single-person households, and 13.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size is 2.88 people.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 to 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were an average of 93.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,990, and the median income for a family $ 36,131. Males have a median income of $ 28,413, women $ 18,808. The per capita income was $ 15,907. 12.2 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
