Columbia County (Arkansas)

History

The Columbia County was formed on December 17, 1852 from parts of Hempstead County, Lafayette County and the Quachita County. It was named after Columbia, the poetical name for the United States in the 20th century.

The first control surveys in 1854 showed that there were slaves in 1675 in Columbia County, with a total population of about 6,000 inhabitants. 1860, when the first census in this county 12,449 people were registered. Of these, 3599 slaves.

The relative isolation and lack of transport routes designed the inter-regional trade extremely difficult. Columbia County was the only county in Arkansas, which had no connection to navigable rivers.
