Crawford County (Arkansas)

The Crawford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat), Van Buren. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northwest Arkansas, on the west by Oklahoma and has an area of 1,565 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Crawford County was formed on October 18, 1820 from parts of Pulaski County and was in 1820 the largest county in Arkansas.

It was named after William Harris Crawford (1772-1834), a US- American War (1815-1816) and Minister of Finance (1816-1825)

From the Crawford County eight other counties, as well as an Indian reservation emerged in the subsequent period.

The first newspaper, the Arkansas Intelligencer was published in 1842. The first telegraph connection was laid in 1851 and the first stagecoach of the Butterfield Overland Mail perverted from September 1858.
