Pope County (Arkansas)
The Pope County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Russellville. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in the central northwestern Arkansas and has an area of 2152 square kilometers, of which 49 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
2000 2010
The Pope County was formed on November 2, 1829 from parts of Crawford County. It was named after John Pope (1770-1845), the fourth governor of the then Arkansas Territory ( 1829-1835 ).
The first white settlers in the area was Major William L. Lovely, who established a trading post for the Cherokee Indians here. Dwight Mission was the second settlement.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 54 469 people in Pope County; were counted 20 701 households and 15.008 families. The population density was 26 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.73 percent White, 2.61 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.64 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.93 percent from other races groups; 1.39 percent are descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 2.06 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 20 701 households out of which 34.3 per cent of children or young people under the age of 18 who lived with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, 27.5 percent were non-families. 23.0 percent of all households were single-person households and 9.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.
25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.6 percent between 18 to 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were an average of 94.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,069, and the median income for a family $ 39,055. Males have a median income of $ 29,914, women $ 19,307. The per capita income was $ 15,918. 11.6 percent of families and 15.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
