Pope County (Arkansas)

The Pope County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Russellville. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

History

2000 2010

The Pope County was formed on November 2, 1829 from parts of Crawford County. It was named after John Pope (1770-1845), the fourth governor of the then Arkansas Territory ( 1829-1835 ).

The first white settlers in the area was Major William L. Lovely, who established a trading post for the Cherokee Indians here. Dwight Mission was the second settlement.
