Little River County, Arkansas

The Little River County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ashdown. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme southwest of Arkansas at Red River, which forms the northern and eastern boundary of the county. The Little River County is bordered on the south by Texas, on the west by Oklahoma and has an area of 1,463 square kilometers, of which 86 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Little River County was formed on March 5, 1867 from parts of Hempstead County. It was named after the Little River, a tributary of the Red River.

2000 2010

The land in and around the Little River County is rich and fertile. It contains an abundance of limestone in some regions near White Cliffs, Okay and Foreman. Built in 1893, the Western Portland Cement Company cement plant near White Cliffs, although now there are only its ruins. Later, the Ideal Cement Company built a cement plant near Okay, this years produced quality cement. Later it was sold to a German company, however, required costly repairs would not perform. Years later created the Foreman Cement Company, owned by the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company, a new cement plant and manufactured quality cement. Finally, the Foreman Cement Company of the main producers of cement in southwestern Arkansas. Even today it is still a manufacturing factory and major employer, owned by the Ash Grove Cement Company in Kansas City, Kansas.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010, lived in Little River County 13,171 people in 5,513 households. The population density was 9.6 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 75.5 percent white, 19.1 percent African American, 1.5 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 2.0 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 2.7 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In the 5,513 households lived statistically 2.28 per person.

22.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 17.0 percent were 65 years or older. 51.1 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 34,776. The per capita income was $ 19,036. 15.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
