Succulents (from the Latin for sucus, juice 'or suculentus for, juicy ') are rich juice plants that are adapted to specific climate and soil conditions. Depending on the plant organ that is remodeled for water storage, a distinction is made between leaf, stem and Wurzelsukkulenten, all combinations are possible. In the field of anatomy liquid- rich tissue is referred to as succulent.

Although cacti make up only a very small part of all existing succulents, these are the best known representatives of the succulent plants. In the language of reason " other " succulents and cacti are distinguished.

Because of the widely differing between species succulence an accurate separation between succulent and non- succulent species is sometimes very difficult. Even within a species can occur succulent and non- succulent specimens. Are both rather herbaceous or woody plants as well as those that store in their beet root sugar and starch rather than water at the boundary line. Succulents are sometimes referred to as " fat plants".

Families and genera

Plant families and genera, in which there are succulents are listed in the following table. To keep the table clear and readable, all families and genera are listed alphabetically by their botanical name and the common name of German families, if any, added. Not taken into account at this point remain the German generic name, the authors of taxa and information about synonyms and further hierarchical level of biological systematics ( as subfamilies), which are given in the individual articles.
