Cheniménil

Cheniménil is a commune with 1157 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Epinal, the Local Government Association, founded in 2002 Vallée de la Vologne and is the second largest of the 30 municipalities of the canton of Bruyeres.

Geography

The community is located between Epinal and Gerardmer Cheniménil in the western foothills of the Vosges.

The territory of Cheniménil includes a portion of the lower Volognetales, which is up to 1500 meters wide here, at the mouth of the creek Barba, and up to 617 meters above sea level reaching ridge northwest and southeast of the Volognetales. The lower elevations of 9.28 km ² large municipality area are dominated by residential and commercial areas as well as agricultural land. Reigns on the mountain slopes to about 450 meters above sea level before grazing, while the upper layers are covered with contiguous forests ( the southern third of the community is determined by the Forest Bois de Bani ).

To Cheniménil include the district of La Houlière as well as the hamlets and isolated farms La Ratte, Rain le Boche, Le Ruxelier, Le Battant, La Starpe, Les housing estates; Coiniot, Chaugoutte, Le Vieux Ponce, Paxonfête, Les Aulnées and Le Senty.

Neighboring communities of Cheniménil are Charmois -devant- Bruyeres in the north, Le Roulier in the northeast ( point of contact ), Docelles in the east, in the southeast Xamontarupt, Jarménil in the south, Archettes in the west and La Baffe in the northwest.

History

In 1156 the town first appears in records as a Chinumasnil. He was part of the Bailiwick of Bruyeres. The place name is composed of chênes ( oaks ) and Menil (Weiler, group of houses ) together.

The wooded area and the water power of the Vologne were the main conditions for wood and paper industry, which in Cheniménil and immediately northeast subsequent community Docelles a long tradition. The oldest, built in the 16th century paper mills were the Stationery François Hurault, Papeterie de l' Isle and the stationery of Harlachol. The last watermill in CHENIMENIL was a flour mill, which was until the mid 19th century in operation. In Docelles exists today a paper mill ( Papeteries de Docelles ), which is part of the UPM -Kymmene Group.

The spinning mill in Cheniménil was long the largest employer in town, they had to close by the pressure of international competition in 2006.

The department Straße 11 of Epinal by La Bresse (as part of the highway Epinal Colmar) passes as northern bypass to Cheniménil.
