The Estádio da Luz ( German Stadium of Light, in the Portuguese often only A Luz, the light, or A Catedral, cathedral, called ) is a football stadium in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. The by the architectural firm Populous (formerly HOK Sport ) designed and opened in 2003 with the official name of the stadium Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica is in possession of the football club Benfica. The stadium was named after the Lisbon region, called Luz.

History

It was the venue of three group matches, quarter -finals and the final of the European Football Championship 2004. Due to its 65 647 covered seats and modern facilities, the stadium by UEFA was rated with five stars. The new building was built right next to the 1954, built the old arena. The Eröffungsfeierlichkeiten were committed on 25 October 2003 a friendly match against the Uruguayan team Nacional Montevideo, emerged from the Benfica 2-1 in the winner.
