Épinal

Epinal is the capital city (prefecture) of the French Department Vosges in the Lorraine region. It is the capital of the cantons Epinal Epinal and Est -Ouest and the seat of the January 1, 2012 refocused community association Agglomà d' Epinal.

In German, the original name was Spinal (also Spinneln ) used until the 19th century, the Spinalium derived from the Latin (from which the name of the inhabitants as a spin aliens stems ) is.

History

Epinal was founded I. towards the end of the 10th century by the Bishop of Metz Dietrich.

The Battle of Epinal took place during the winter campaign 1814 War of Liberation on January 11, 1814 between French and Württemberg troops, who were supported by Russian Cossacks instead.

In June 1940, Epinal, was captured in the context of the western campaign of troops of the Wehrmacht, namely, the 2nd Panzer Division quickly.

The city on the Mosel is a two-mile branch canal to the Canal des Vosges that creates a navigable route to the Mediterranean and across the Rhine - Marne Canal to the Rhine in connection with the rivers Saône and Rhône, connected.
