Knox County (Tennessee)

Knox County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Knoxville.

Geography

The County is located in the central northeastern Tennessee and has an area of 1362 square kilometers, of which 45 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Union County, Grainger County, Jefferson County, Sevier County, Blount County, Loudon County, Roane County and Anderson County.

History

Knox County was formed on June 11, 1792 from parts of Greene County and Hawkins County. It was named after Henry Knox, a commander of the artillery in the Continental Army and the first U.S. Secretary of War of the United States.
