Smith County (Tennessee)
Smith County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carthage.
Geography
The County is located just north-east of the geographic center of Tennessee, is located in the north about 50 miles from Kentucky and has an area of 843 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Macon County, Jackson County, Putnam County, DeKalb County, Wilson County and Trousdale County.

History
Smith County was formed on October 26, 1799 from parts of Sumner County. It was named after Daniel Smith, an American surveyor, colonel in the American Revolutionary War and two -time U.S. Senator from Tennessee.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Smith County 17,712 people in 6,878 households and 5,069 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.42 percent White, 2.53 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.59 percent from other races groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,878 households out of which 34.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers and 26.3 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent of all households and 11.1 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average household size was 3.00.
25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.4 percent were older than 65, the average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,625, and the median income for a family was $ 41,645. Males have a median income of $ 30,853, women $ 22,133. The per capita income was $ 17,473. 10.3 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
