Smith County (Tennessee)

Smith County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carthage.

Geography

The County is located just north-east of the geographic center of Tennessee, is located in the north about 50 miles from Kentucky and has an area of 843 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Macon County, Jackson County, Putnam County, DeKalb County, Wilson County and Trousdale County.

History

Smith County was formed on October 26, 1799 from parts of Sumner County. It was named after Daniel Smith, an American surveyor, colonel in the American Revolutionary War and two -time U.S. Senator from Tennessee.
